The 72 Seasonal Terms:

The 72 Seasonal Terms originated as a traditional Chinese system for marking the passage of time, rooted in ancient astronomy and calendar science. Developed in ancient China around the 4th century BC, the system was introduced to Japan in the 6th century, where it was adapted to the local climate and culture.

The year was divided into 24 solar terms based on the sun’s movement. Each term was further divided into three shorter periods, creating 72 micro-seasons, each lasting about five days. Rather than relying on abstract dates, these terms describe observable changes in nature—the blooming of flowers, the behavior of animals, shifts in weather, and signs essential to farming.

In ancient Japan, the 72 Seasonal Terms served as a practical agricultural guide. Farmers depended on these subtle cues to know when to plant, sow, harvest, or prepare the land. Beyond agriculture, they shaped daily life, poetry, and seasonal awareness, encouraging people to live attentively alongside nature.

This period also finds a quiet reflection in a haiku by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (Japanese writer, 1892–1927), capturing the spirit of Japan:

A sparrow,

losing its voice

before the white magnolia

Sparrows are known for their ceaseless chirping, yet here even they fall silent. Before the blooming white magnolia—pure, dignified, and fully present—nature itself seems to pause. Time begins to move not when something happens, but when something is noticed.
